Post-Operative Instructions for Dental Incise and Drain Procedure

Congratulations on completing your dental incise and drain procedure. Following the procedure, it is important to follow these instructions to ensure a smooth and successful recovery.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Pain Management: It is normal to experience some discomfort after the procedure. You can manage this by taking over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. If prescribed a pain medication, follow the instructions provided by your dentist.

Swelling: You may experience some swelling, bruising or redness around the affected area. This is normal and can be reduced by applying ice to the affected area for the first 24 hours after the procedure. Apply ice for 20 minutes at a time, with 20-minute breaks in between.

Oral Hygiene: Good oral hygiene is essential to promote healing and prevent infection. After the procedure, brush and floss your teeth as usual, but avoid the affected area. Your dentist may recommend an antiseptic mouthwash to rinse your mouth with.

Eating and Drinking: It is recommended to avoid hot foods and drinks for the first 24 hours after the procedure. Instead, consume cool, soft foods and liquids, such as soups and smoothies. Avoid alcohol and smoking during the healing process.

Follow-up Appointment: It is important to attend any follow-up appointments as scheduled by your dentist. This will ensure proper healing and assess any complications that may arise.

If you experience any of the following symptoms, contact your dentist immediately:

  • Excessive bleeding

  • High fever or chills

  • Severe pain or swelling

  • Numbness or tingling around the affected area

By following these instructions, you can ensure a smooth and successful recovery after your dental incise and drain procedure.
